“This is the origin of the game. Golf in its purest form, and it’s still played that way on a course seemingly untouched by time."- Arnold Palmer
Few places in the world feel as connected to a sport as the Old Course does to golf. Revered as the Home of Golf, the Old Course isn’t just a destination, it’s a pilgrimage.
Set along the rugged coast of Scotland, St. Andrews isn’t just where golf was born, it’s where the game grew up. Its windswept fairways have hosted the game for over 600 years, with roots stretching back to the 1400s. Every divot and every bunker hold a chapter in golf’s epic.
This isn’t your average round. The Old Course plays like a living museum: double greens, deep pot bunkers with names like “Hell,” and a layout shaped more by centuries than architects. It’s quirky, challenging, and proudly old-school, and that’s what makes it unforgettable.
Walk the Swilcan Bridge and you follow in the footsteps of giants. From Old Tom Morris, who helped shape the course and the game, to modern legends like Tiger, Jack, and Seve, who added their own chapters to its story. Moments like Seve’s joyful celebration in 1984 preventing a Tom Watson Open three-peat, Tiger’s flawless wire-to-wire win in 2000 completing the career grand slam, and Zach Johnson’s playoff triumph in 2015 didn’t just define careers- they became part of golf’s collective memory.
But it’s not just about the championships. It’s about the culture. The deep respect for the game’s origins. The connection between past and present. St. Andrews reminds us that golf is more than a scorecard; it’s a tradition passed down through generations, kept alive every time someone tees it up with love for the game.
So, as we reflect on the history of the sport, there’s no better place to focus than here. Because on this green, you don’t just play. You belong to something bigger.
Thank you to my friends Chad and Amanda for providing the pics for this blog post from Chad's recent trip to St. Andrews in June!
